  3. Spring (April) vs Autumn (October) - which is better?

Quick Answer: April and October are the two months most Kashmiris would personally recommend to visitors. April brings tulip gardens and blossom-covered orchards. October delivers clear skies, chinar trees turning amber, and none of the summer crowds. Both months sit in the Rs 3,000-5,000 per day budget range for comfortable travel.

info

At a Glance | Best months: April, October. Budget: Rs 2,500-6,000/day depending on houseboat vs hotel. Getting there: 1.5-hr flight to Srinagar or 8-9 hr drive from Jammu on NH44. Plan your trip at viakashmir.in.

I have lived in the valley my whole life and watched every season from the same window overlooking the Jhelum. The honest answer is that Kashmir has no bad month - it has wrong expectations. Visitors who come in January expecting to walk Mughal Gardens are disappointed. Visitors who come in July expecting empty trails find themselves in a traffic jam on the Pahalgam road. Kashmir Pulse is Via Kashmir's editorial channel written by locals, and this is the guide we would give our own cousins planning their first trip. Check viakashmir.in for current package availability before you book anything.

What is Kashmir actually like in each month?

  • January: Chillai Kalan (the 40-day deep winter ends Jan 31). Dal Lake partially freezes. Gulmarg skiing in full swing. Srinagar temperatures drop to -4C at night. Almost no tourists - hotel rates are rock bottom.
  • February: Still cold but a few brave almond trees start flowering in Budgam district. Gulmarg ski season peaks. Chillai Khurd (20 lighter winter days) begins Feb 1.
  • March: Valley floor warms up to 10-15C by afternoon. Cherry blossoms appear in Badamwari garden in the old city. Tulip Garden opens late March - book accommodation a month ahead.
  • April: Best overall month. Tulips at full bloom, Mughal Gardens lush, weather 14-22C, no monsoon humidity. Book Dal Lake houseboats 3-4 weeks early.
  • May: Slightly warmer, wildflowers carpet Gulmarg meadow. Sonmarg and Pahalgam roads fully open. School holidays start - crowds build from mid-May.
  • June: Summer peak begins. NH44 highway gets congested on weekends. Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage starts. High altitude treks open - Great Lakes Trek is ideal.
  • July: Hottest month, 28-32C in Srinagar. Heavy tourist traffic. Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Kolahoi treks fully accessible. Dal Lake can feel crowded.
  • August: Similar to July. Monsoon brings some rain but less than the plains. Mountain meadows are at their greenest. Last weeks see crowds thin slightly.
  • September: Crowds ease noticeably. Weather cools to 20-26C. Apple harvest begins - the Shopian and Sopore orchards turn red. One of the best trekking months.
  • October: Chinar trees turn. Old City neighbourhoods like Rainawari and Naseem Bagh are carpeted in leaves. Cool evenings. Excellent visibility for photography.
  • November: Valley quiets down fast. First snowfall often hits Gulmarg in November. Hotel rates drop 30-40%. A genuinely underrated month for solo travellers.
  • December: Chillai Kalan begins Dec 21. Srinagar gets occasional snowfall. Gulmarg ski lifts open, usually by mid-December. Magical atmosphere but pack seriously warm clothes.

When should trekkers and adventure travellers come?

The high-altitude trekking window is June to mid-September. Before June, most passes above 3,500m have snow that makes navigation difficult without a guide. After mid-September, night temperatures at camp drop to near zero. The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is best done in late July or August when the lakes are ice-free. The Kolahoi Glacier trek from Aru Valley runs well from June through August. For day hikes and meadow walks, May and September give you the best combination of open trails and manageable crowds. Most visitors underestimate how quickly weather changes above 3,000m - afternoon storms are common in July and August even on clear-morning days.

Spring (April) vs Autumn (October) - which is better?

  • April - Tulip Garden open (Asia's largest, free entry for J&K residents, Rs 50 for visitors). Cherry blossoms in Badamwari. Mughal Gardens at their greenest. Slightly higher hotel rates due to peak domestic season.
  • October - Chinar trees at peak colour (the 200-year-old chinars near Nishat Bagh are stunning). Apple orchards heavy with fruit. Cooler evenings ideal for walking. Fewer visitors than April.
  • April wins for first-time visitors who want the classic postcard Kashmir image.
  • October wins for returning visitors, photographers, and anyone who values quiet.
  • Budget note: October is 10-15% cheaper on average for accommodation than April.
  • Weather reliability: October is more consistently clear. April can have surprise rain showers.

Frequently asked questions about the best time to visit Kashmir

Can I visit Kashmir during the monsoon in July and August?

Yes, and many people do. Kashmir gets far less monsoon rain than the rest of India - the Himalayas block most of it. Expect some afternoon showers but not the downpours of Mumbai or Kerala. The valley is intensely green, meadows are wildflower-covered, and hotels offer decent rates. The main downside is road congestion, especially on weekends when Delhi and Punjab families arrive in large numbers. If you are trekking, be prepared for muddy trails and unpredictable afternoon weather.

Is January too cold to visit Kashmir?

Not if you are going to Gulmarg to ski or to experience Chillai Kalan. Srinagar itself is manageable with proper winter clothing - temperatures range from -4C at night to 6C in the afternoon. The Mughal Gardens and most outdoor attractions are bare, so January is not ideal for sightseeing. It is ideal for skiing, snow photography, houseboat fireside evenings, and the lowest hotel rates of the year - a good Dal Lake houseboat can be had for Rs 2,500-3,500 per night in January versus Rs 6,000-8,000 in April.

When is Gulmarg best to visit?

Gulmarg has two peak seasons. Winter (December to early March) for skiing - the Gondola carries you to 4,200m and the slopes suit beginner to advanced skiers. Summer (May to August) for meadow walks, pony rides, and the green golf course at 2,600m. April and November are shoulder months when Gulmarg is quieter and cheaper. Most locals prefer May - the snow has mostly gone from the lower slopes but the air is crisp and the meadow is starting to green up. See our full Gulmarg travel guide.

When is the cheapest time to visit Kashmir?

January and February are the cheapest months by a significant margin. Hotel rates drop 40-50% compared to peak spring. November is the second cheapest. If budget is your main concern and you do not mind cold, a January Gulmarg ski trip is exceptional value - you can stay well, eat well, and ski for Rs 2,500-3,500 per day total. Book through viakashmir.in for winter packages that bundle the Gondola pass with accommodation.

What is the best month for trekking in Kashmir?

Late July through mid-September is the prime trekking window. July gives you full lake access and maximum daylight hours. September gives you cooler temperatures, less rain, and cleaner visibility for mountain views. August sits between the two and is excellent for the Kashmir Great Lakes circuit. June is fine for lower treks like Tarsar day walks but the high passes may have residual snow. Always hire a licensed local guide - the Forest Department requires it for most registered trek routes and it is genuinely useful on trails that are not well-marked.

In the 15 years I have tracked tourist arrivals, October consistently shows the highest visitor satisfaction scores - not because the weather is the best, but because expectations and reality align. The valley is calm, the colours are genuine, and Kashmiris have time to actually talk to you.
