Quick Answer: Flying to Srinagar is the fastest and most reliable option - 1.5 hours from Delhi, 2 hours from Mumbai. The Jammu-Srinagar highway (NH44) takes 8-9 hours by road and is occasionally closed for maintenance or landslides. There is no direct train to Srinagar yet - the Banihal rail link stops at Banihal, 100km short of the city.

At a Glance | Cheapest flights: Rs 3,500-6,000 from Delhi if booked 3-4 weeks early. Road from Jammu: 270km, 8-9 hours. Train: Jammu Tawi station is the nearest major railhead (Srinagar-bound trains stop at Banihal only). Plan transport at viakashmir.in.

People ask me this question more than any other. Most visitors from Delhi assume they can take the night train the way they would to Shimla or Dehradun - and the surprise when they realise there is no direct rail link to Srinagar is real. Kashmir's geography is its own transport policy. The valley sits at 1,600m behind two mountain ranges, and every route in involves either a mountain highway or an aircraft. Kashmir Pulse is Via Kashmir's editorial channel written by locals. This is what we tell every first-timer about getting here. For cab hire from the airport or Banihal, viakashmir.in has fixed-rate options with no negotiation needed.

Which airlines fly to Srinagar and what do tickets cost?

Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar (code: SXR) is connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and a handful of other cities. IndiGo and Air India operate the most frequent Delhi-Srinagar routes with 6-8 flights daily between them. SpiceJet and Go First (when operational) cover this route too. Fares from Delhi are genuinely reasonable if you book early: Rs 3,500-5,500 for a one-way ticket booked 3-4 weeks out is achievable. Last-minute fares spike to Rs 8,000-12,000 during school holidays and the Amarnath Yatra season (June-August). The flight itself is 1 hour 20 minutes. The approach over the Pir Panjal range is one of the most scenic landings in India - get a window seat.

  • Delhi to Srinagar: 1 hr 20 min. Daily frequency: 6-10 flights (IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet)
  • Mumbai to Srinagar: 2 hr 15 min. 2-4 daily flights.
  • Bengaluru to Srinagar: 2 hr 45 min. 1-2 daily flights, sometimes with a stop.
  • Best booking window: 21-30 days ahead for lowest fares.
  • Peak season (May, June, October): Book 45-60 days ahead or pay 40% more.
  • Weather delays: Srinagar airport fogs up in winter mornings - early flights sometimes delayed by 1-2 hours. Plan accordingly.

What is the Jammu-Srinagar highway actually like?

NH44 from Jammu to Srinagar is 270km and takes 8-9 hours under normal conditions. It is one of India's most strategically important roads and also one of its most dramatic. The route climbs through the Patnitop area, crosses the 2,200m Banihal Pass (now bypassed by the Banihal Tunnel, which cuts 40 minutes off the journey), and descends into the Kashmir valley at Qazigund. The road is generally well-maintained on the Jammu side. The stretch from Ramban to Banihal has a history of landslides during heavy rain - check road status with JKTRAFFICPOLICE on X (formerly Twitter) before you depart. One-way traffic regulations operate on certain sections between 6am and 8pm. Most travellers hire a private cab (Rs 3,500-5,000 Jammu to Srinagar) or take the government SRTC bus (Rs 350-500 but takes 10-11 hours with stops).

Flying vs driving from Delhi - which makes more sense?

  • Flying: Total time 3-4 hours door to door from central Delhi. Cost Rs 3,500-7,000 one way. No weather risk in the valley itself (only fog delays). Best for most visitors.
  • Driving from Delhi: 800km, minimum 14-16 hours via Jammu. Adds a night in Jammu typically. Total Rs 6,000-9,000 for fuel and tolls in own car, or Rs 8,000-12,000 in a hired cab.
  • Driving makes sense if: you want to see Jammu and Vaishno Devi en route, you are travelling with a lot of luggage or equipment (skis, camping gear), or you have car sickness concerns with mountain roads.
  • Flying makes sense if: time is limited, you are travelling with children or elderly family, or fares are under Rs 5,000.
  • Hybrid option: fly one way, drive back. This is what many Delhi families do - they arrive rested and use the drive home to see Patnitop.

Frequently asked questions about reaching Kashmir

What are the cheapest flights to Srinagar?

IndiGo consistently offers the lowest base fares on the Delhi-Srinagar route. Book 3-4 weeks ahead on a Tuesday or Wednesday (midweek fares are typically 10-15% lower than weekends). Setting a price alert on Google Flights for the SXR route helps catch sales. Avoid booking in the last week of April, the entire month of June, and the first two weeks of October - these are the three peak windows when fares roughly double.

Is the Jammu-Srinagar road safe?

For the vast majority of travellers, yes. The highway is a national highway with heavy traffic including army convoys and commercial vehicles. The risk periods are: (1) winter snowfall between November and February on the Banihal section, (2) monsoon landslides in July-August on the Ramban-Ramban gorge section. Both are well-monitored by the J&K Traffic Police. Check @JKTrafficPolice on social media the evening before you plan to drive. Avoid night driving on the Jammu side - not because of security but simply because the bends are unforgiving in poor visibility.

Can I take a train directly to Srinagar?

No direct train exists yet. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project has been under construction for decades and is partially operational. Currently, trains run from Jammu Tawi to Banihal (about 100km from Srinagar). From Banihal, you need a cab or bus connection to Srinagar (1.5-2 hours). If you want to use rail, take any overnight train from Delhi to Jammu Tawi, then connect to the Banihal passenger train, then cab onward. Most travellers find this adds 4-5 hours compared to flying and is only worth it if you have a strong preference for train travel.

Which airline is best for Srinagar?

For reliability and price, IndiGo leads. Air India is preferred by many for the extra legroom on full-service aircraft and the better food. SpiceJet offers competitive fares but has had punctuality issues on this route during busy seasons. All three operate modern aircraft with pressurised cabins suitable for the high-altitude approach. Avoid the cheapest possible airline combination that routes you through two stops - the time saving of a direct flight is worth Rs 500-1,000 extra.

How long does the Jammu to Srinagar drive take?

Allow 9 hours minimum for a comfortable drive, including one proper stop at Patnitop (1,800m elevation, clean dhabas, fuel station) and use of the Banihal Tunnel. Drivers who claim 7 hours are either driving fast or skipping stops - neither is a good idea on NH44. If there is a convoy movement or a road blockage at Ramban, add 1-2 hours. Start from Jammu no later than 7am to arrive in Srinagar before dark.

The Banihal Tunnel opened in 2017 and cut 45 minutes off the Srinagar approach. Before that, the old Banihal Pass road at 2,832m was closed for three to four months every winter. The tunnel changed how the valley connects to the rest of India - it is open 365 days a year.
