Quick Answer: The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL) is a 7-day, ~70 km route starting from Sonamarg (or Shitkadi) and ending at Naranag, passing six high-altitude lakes: Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, Gangabal, and Nundkol. Maximum altitude: 4,400m (Gadsar Pass). Best months: July–mid September. Guided cost: ₹15,000–₹25,000 per person including camping, meals, and guide.

Why the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek Is Special

Most Himalayan treks offer one or two spectacular lake views. The KGL offers six, each distinct in colour and setting, connected by passes that cross above 4,000m. The route is entirely above the treeline for 5 of the 7 days - you're in open mountain terrain the whole time, with the full Himalayan scale visible. This is the trek that converts casual hikers into serious trekkers.

Unlike the Gangabal trek (4 days, starts at Naranag), the KGL requires a full week. It is not significantly more technically demanding, but the sustained duration - 7 days at altitude - requires better baseline fitness and more thorough gear preparation.

The Route: Day by Day

  1. Day 1 - Sonamarg to Nichnai (10 km, 5 hrs, ascent 900m): From the meadow, the trail climbs steeply out of the Sindh valley. Camp at Nichnai meadow (3,500m). First views of the Nichnai lake below the pass.
  2. Day 2 - Nichnai to Vishansar Lake (10 km, 5 hrs, over Nichnai Pass 4,100m): The first major pass. Vishansar Lake at 3,710m - deep turquoise, 1.5 km wide. The single most photographed lake on the route. Camp at the lake shore.
  3. Day 3 - Vishansar to Krishansar to Gadsar (12 km, 6 hrs): A rest morning at Vishansar then traverse to adjacent Krishansar (3,800m, darker, more dramatic) and continue to Gadsar valley. Camp at Gadsar.
  4. Day 4 - Gadsar to Satsar (10 km, 5 hrs, over Gadsar Pass 4,200m): The highest point on the route. Gadsar Pass has permanent snow patches. Satsar is a chain of seven small lakes - a unique landscape unlike the single large lakes earlier in the route.
  5. Day 5 - Satsar to Gangabal Lake (12 km, 6 hrs): The route descends to the Gangabal valley. Gangabal Lake (3,500m) is the largest on the route - 4 km long. Camp here, with Harmukh (5,142m) directly above.
  6. Day 6 - Gangabal rest day or Nundkol extension: Nundkol Lake is 3 km from Gangabal at 3,480m. The ridge between the two lakes gives views of the full route behind you. Rest, recover, and prepare for the final descent.
  7. Day 7 - Gangabal to Naranag (14 km, 6 hrs, descent 1,200m): The trail passes through the old-growth forest above Naranag and emerges at the 8th-century Naranag temple ruins. Transport pickup at Naranag to Srinagar (56 km, 1.5 hrs).

Difficulty and Fitness Requirements

The KGL is a Grade Moderate-Challenging trek. You should be comfortable with 5–7 hour walking days, crossing snow-covered passes (trekking poles essential), and sleeping at altitude (3,500–3,800m campsites). No technical climbing. Prior multi-day trekking experience is strongly recommended - this is not a beginner's trek. Acclimatise in Srinagar for 1 day before starting if flying from sea level.

Best Months and Weather Window

  • July 10 – August 20: Passes fully snow-free, all trails clear. Wildflowers at peak. Most popular window - book guides and camps early.
  • August 20 – September 15: Slightly cooler, fewer trekkers, excellent visibility. The best light for photography.
  • September 15 – October 1: Early snow possible on Gadsar Pass (4,200m). Experienced trekkers only in this window.

How to Book and What It Costs

A fully guided KGL trek (guide, horseman, cook, camping equipment, all meals for 7 days) costs ₹15,000–₹25,000 per person depending on group size and equipment quality. Solo travellers pay more per person; groups of 4+ bring the cost down. Via Kashmir's adventure packages cover the full KGL with registered guides and proper camping setup.

Frequently Asked Questions: Kashmir Great Lakes Trek

Do I need a permit for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek? Indian nationals do not need a trekking permit for the KGL route. Foreigners should verify with the J&K Forest Department or J&K Tourism - requirements can change seasonally.

Can I do the KGL without a guide? The main trail is frequently done by experienced, map-competent trekkers without guides. However, pass routes can be unclear in mist or early snow. For first-time KGL trekkers, a guide significantly reduces risk.

How fit do I need to be? You should be able to walk 6–7 hours a day with a 10–12 kg pack on uneven terrain. Train for 6–8 weeks before the trek with long walks on hilly terrain.

What's the best base to stay before starting? Sonamarg (trek start) or Srinagar (1 night to acclimatise). Read our Sonamarg guide for accommodation options.

Via Kashmir organises guided Kashmir Great Lakes treks - camping, meals, registered guides, and Srinagar transfers all included.
