Quick Answer: Khilanmarg is an alpine meadow at approximately 3,000m, directly above the Gulmarg resort, reached by a 4-5km walk on a clear trail from the main Gulmarg meadow. In June and July it has concentrated wildflowers, Himalayan sheep and pony flocks from the local shepherd community, a clear view of Nanga Parbat to the northwest, and almost no tourists. Most Gulmarg visitors take the Gondola to Kongdoori and Apharwat without knowing Khilanmarg exists. That is precisely why it remains what it is.

Gulmarg has a specific problem for people who want to see it outside of tourist infrastructure: the Gondola is the only thing that most visitor literature describes. Phase 1 to Kongdoori, Phase 2 to Apharwat. The meadow itself gets a line or two. Khilanmarg does not appear at all. It is the meadow that Gulmarg's local shepherds have used for summer grazing for as long as people have been in the mountains here -- sitting above the pine treeline, below the first permanent snow, accessible on foot from the resort in about 2 to 2.5 hours at an easy alpine pace.

Where Is Khilanmarg and How Do You Get There?

Khilanmarg is the bowl-shaped meadow directly above the main Gulmarg meadow to the northeast, at approximately 2,950-3,050m. From the Gulmarg resort, the route begins at the northeastern end of the main meadow -- behind the Gondola base station -- and follows a well-worn trail through the pine belt and then up into the open meadow above. The distance is 4-5km from the resort centre, with an altitude gain of approximately 350m.

There is no cable car, no ticket counter, and no tourist infrastructure at Khilanmarg. You walk up, spend time there, and walk back. Horses can be hired from the base of the trail -- the pony wallahs at Gulmarg know the route well, and hiring a horse for the uphill section is a common approach. The trail takes 2 to 2.5 hours up at an easy pace; the return is 1.5 to 2 hours.

What Is Khilanmarg Like in June and July?

The wildflower composition at Khilanmarg in June and July is significantly denser and more varied than the main Gulmarg meadow below. The reasons are altitude and grazing management: the high meadow sees fewer horses and more sheep, and the flower species that appear above 2,900m include Himalayan blue poppy (Meconopsis aculeata), wild Himalayan strawberry, several species of Himalayan primula, and low-growing alpines specific to the transition zone between the forest belt and the permanent snow.

The blue poppy appears in the damper sections of the Khilanmarg bowl, near the patches of residual snowmelt in June. It closes in full sun; the best time to see it open is before 11am. The pony wallahs who bring horses up to Khilanmarg know the locations and will point them out if asked.

The Himalayan sheep at Khilanmarg in summer belong to Gujjar and Bakarwal pastoral communities who move their flocks up from the Valley floor in June, following the retreating snow. The flocks arrive at Khilanmarg from mid-June onward. The sound of a large flock in the high meadow -- the bells, the movement, the dogs working the perimeter -- is one of the specific sounds of Kashmir's high-altitude summer entirely absent from the Gondola experience.

The View from Khilanmarg

From the Khilanmarg meadow bowl, the view northwest on a clear day includes Nanga Parbat -- at 8,126m, the westernmost 8,000-metre peak in the world, visible as a white mass rising above the intervening ridgelines approximately 90km away. The best time for Nanga Parbat visibility is early morning before dust and heat haze build -- arriving at Khilanmarg by 9am for the view, then spending time in the meadow through the morning, is the recommended approach. The view south and southeast from Khilanmarg covers the full main Gulmarg meadow below, the Tangmarg road winding down the switchbacks, and on very clear days, Srinagar and the Dal Lake basin in the distance.

Khilanmarg vs the Gondola: Two Different Experiences

The Gondola Phase 2 to Apharwat at 3,979m gives altitude: above the treeline, the high rock environment, residual snow in June, the full Himalayan range in all directions. It is the most dramatic viewpoint accessible from Gulmarg. Khilanmarg gives the meadow at walking speed: the wildflowers at ground level, the pastoral community, the encounter with the landscape at a pace where you notice what is in it rather than viewing it from above.

If you have one day in Gulmarg: Gondola Phase 1 and Phase 2 in the morning (book tickets early, be at the base by 8am), Khilanmarg walk in the afternoon (start the trail by 2pm, back by 5pm). If you have two days: Gondola on day one, Khilanmarg on day two as a full morning walk. Via Kashmir's summer Gulmarg overnight bookings are designed for this combination -- the two-day stay that gives you both.

Practical Notes for the Khilanmarg Walk

  • Start time: leave the Gulmarg resort no later than 9am. Afternoon cloud builds from 2-3pm in July and the meadow has no shelter.
  • What to bring: a proper jacket (8-14 degrees at 3,000m, wind significant on the upper trail), 2 litres of water minimum, snack food, and sun protection -- UV is considerably higher at altitude.
  • Fitness level: achievable for most adults at a moderate pace. Altitude gain of 350m over 4km is gradual. A slow first 30 minutes allows adjustment if recently arrived from sea level.
  • Horse hire: ponies available from the northern end of the Gulmarg meadow for the uphill section. Typically Rs 400-700 per person for the 4km up.

Frequently Asked Questions: Khilanmarg Kashmir

How do you get to Khilanmarg from Gulmarg?

Khilanmarg is reached on foot from the main Gulmarg meadow. The trail begins at the northeastern end of the meadow, behind the Gondola base station, and climbs 350m over approximately 4-5km to the Khilanmarg bowl at 3,000m. The walk takes 2 to 2.5 hours up, 1.5 to 2 hours back. Horses can be hired at the trailhead for the uphill section. There is no cable car or vehicle access to Khilanmarg.

Is Khilanmarg different from the Gulmarg Gondola?

Yes -- the Gondola goes to Kongdoori (Phase 1) and Apharwat (Phase 2, 3,979m) by cable car. Khilanmarg is a separate meadow bowl at approximately 3,000m reached only on foot from the main Gulmarg meadow. The Gondola experience is about altitude and the summit view. The Khilanmarg walk is about the meadow -- wildflowers, shepherd flocks, the landscape at walking pace. They are accessed from different starting points and offer fundamentally different experiences.

Is the Khilanmarg walk safe?

Yes, for reasonably fit adults. The trail is well-defined and the terrain is open meadow and managed forest -- no technical climbing or exposed ridges. The main considerations are altitude (3,000m -- a gradual pace is important if you have recently arrived from lower elevations), weather in late July (afternoon cloud and occasional rain), and standard mountain preparation: water, jacket, sun protection. A guide is not required but can enhance the walk with knowledge of the plants and shepherd community.

What is the best time to visit Khilanmarg?

June and July are the best months, with the wildflower peak in the first two weeks of July. The Himalayan blue poppy is at its best in late June and early July, open before 11am. The shepherd flocks from the Gujjar and Bakarwal communities arrive from mid-June onward. August is still good but the wildflower maximum has passed. May is possible but residual snow on the upper trail makes it less pleasant.

Can I see Nanga Parbat from Khilanmarg?

Yes -- on clear mornings before 11am, Nanga Parbat is visible from the Khilanmarg meadow bowl as a white massif to the northwest, approximately 90km away. The view is clearer from Khilanmarg than from the main Gulmarg meadow because Khilanmarg is higher and the treeline is behind you. Early July mornings, before cloud builds from the west, give the most consistent Nanga Parbat visibility.
