Seven days is the ideal length for Kashmir. This is the itinerary a local would give a well-travelled friend — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg — with the right number of nights each, what to skip, and honest timing.

Quick Answer: The ideal 7-day Kashmir itinerary covers Srinagar (2 nights), Gulmarg (1 night), Pahalgam (2 nights), and Sonamarg (1 night), with arrival/departure through Srinagar. This gives enough time for each destination without rushing. Total driving: under 300 km across the 7 days.

The 7-Day Route at a Glance

  • Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar: Dal Lake houseboat or hotel. Evening shikara ride. Old city market walk.
  • Day 2 — Srinagar full day: Mughal gardens (Shalimar, Nishat), Old City walking tour, Jama Masjid.
  • Day 3 — Srinagar to Gulmarg (51 km, 1.5 hrs): Gondola Phase 1 + 2. Afternoon meadow walk.
  • Day 4 — Gulmarg to Pahalgam (145 km, 4 hrs via Srinagar): Betaab Valley and Chandanwari on arrival.
  • Day 5 — Pahalgam full day: Baisaran meadow morning, Aru Valley afternoon.
  • Day 6 — Pahalgam to Sonamarg (122 km, 3.5 hrs): Thajiwas Glacier afternoon, camp or hotel.
  • Day 7 — Sonamarg to Srinagar (87 km, 2.5 hrs): Early return for afternoon flight.

Day 1–2: Srinagar — Why 2 Nights Is the Right Call

Most packaged tours give Srinagar one night. This is wrong. Two nights means you get a full day — the Mughal gardens in the morning, the old city walk in the afternoon, and the shikara ride at dusk. You can't compress this into half a day without reducing it to checkboxes.

Strongly recommend at least one night on a Dal Lake houseboat — wake up on water for the Dal Lake sunrise before the vendors start moving at 6:30 AM. This is the Srinagar experience nothing else replicates.

Day 3: Gulmarg — One Night Is Enough

Gulmarg in summer is a one-night destination for most travellers. Arrive by noon, do both gondola phases (Phase 2 views are the main event), walk the meadow. One night in a good Gulmarg hotel, early morning for the Outer Circular walk if you're up for it, then drive toward Pahalgam. Our full Gulmarg summer guide has detailed activity and pricing.

Day 4–5: Pahalgam — Why It Needs 2 Nights

Pahalgam is the most under-allocated destination in most Kashmir itineraries. One night means one rushed morning at Betaab Valley, then leaving. Two nights means Betaab + Chandanwari on Day 4, Baisaran meadow and Aru Valley on Day 5. Aru Valley in the evening light — the Lidder tributary beside the village, Gujjar horses in the meadow — is one of Kashmir's most quietly beautiful moments. Full route in the Pahalgam 2-day itinerary.

Day 6: Sonamarg — One Night, Leave Early

Sonamarg is magnificent and needs only one night. The 87 km drive from Srinagar on NH 44 is itself an experience — you pass through the Sind Valley, cross the Sindh river several times, and the landscape shifts from rice paddies to glacial moraines over two hours. Thajiwas Glacier (45 min walk from the meadow) is the main activity. See our Sonamarg full guide for pony vs walking options.

Transport for the 7-Day Itinerary

A private cab package covering the full route — airport pickup, all 7 days, airport drop — is the most practical option. Via Kashmir's cab service offers fixed-price route packages. Budget ₹12,000–₹18,000 for a full 7-day private vehicle (Innova or equivalent, all fuel and tolls included).

What to Skip on a 7-Day Kashmir Trip

  • Skip Doodhpathri and Yusmarg on a 7-day first-time visit — these are best for return visits or when you want a quieter alternative to the main circuit.
  • Skip Gurez Valley — it's 5–6 hours from Srinagar and deserves a standalone 2-night addition, not a rushed inclusion in a 7-day loop.
  • Don't overschedule Srinagar with shopping — the old city bazaar and houseboat experience take time, and buying pressure from carpet shops can consume an entire day if you're not firm.

Frequently Asked Questions: Kashmir 7-Day Itinerary

Is 7 days enough for Kashmir? Yes — 7 days covers the main circuit comfortably. 5 days is rushed. 10 days allows you to add Gurez Valley, a trek day, or slower-paced alternatives like Yusmarg and Doodhpathri.

What is the best season for this 7-day itinerary? May–September for the full circuit (all roads open). October is excellent for autumn colour with slightly reduced Sonamarg access risk. December–February for a snow-focused version (Gulmarg skiing replaces summer activities).

Should I pre-book hotels for a Kashmir 7-day trip? Yes, especially June–August when hotels at Gulmarg and Pahalgam fill 4–6 weeks in advance. Houseboat nights in Srinagar should also be booked at least 2 weeks ahead for good boats. Use Via Kashmir's hotel listings for verified options.

What does a 7-day Kashmir trip cost? See our full Kashmir trip cost guide for a complete breakdown. Budget: ₹25,000–₹35,000/person. Mid-range: ₹45,000–₹70,000/person. Luxury: ₹1,00,000+/person.

Can I do this itinerary without a pre-arranged cab? Technically, but not recommended. Shared transport between these destinations is slow, unreliable for timing, and leaves you stranded for Aru Valley and Baisaran. A private cab is the right way to do Kashmir.
